The evolution of tag team wrestling one is an interesting one to say the least. Time was when bookers would use tag teams to help get a pair of workers over before the inevitable turn-and-split storyline used to elevate both as singles competitors.

These days however, tag team wrestling seems largely to be something of an afterthought in modern promotions, with bookers simply running out of ideas for two guys and throwing them together at random (Booker T and Goldust anyone?).

Regardless of the motives behind doubles action, there are a number of pro wrestling tag teams whose legacy, legend and influence on the grap -game has stood the test of time and whose names are still held in the highest reverence amongst fans.

Here then, is a look at some of the greatest wrestling tag teams of all time.

THE ROAD WARRIORS / LEGION OF DOOM

Taking their look, gimmick, and indeed, their name from the movie Mad Max II: The Road Warrior, Michael 'Hawk' Hegstrand and Joseph 'Animal' Laurinatis were arguably the most popular tag team in pro wrestling history, not to mention one of the most successful.

Getting their start in the Georgia territory back in the eighties as part of Paul Ellering's Legion of Doom stable (which also included notable talent such as King Kong Bundy, Arn Anderson and Jake 'The Snake' Roberts), the 'Warriors high-impact approach and killer look won them numerous fans, and before long the devastating duo found them ripping it up across Japan (with All Japan Pro Wrestling), the AWA (where their feud with The Fabulous Freebirds became legendary) and the NWA / WCW .

Eventually, Animal and Hawk made their way to the World Wrestling Federation where, repackaged as The Legion of Doom, their popularity sky-rocketed and they became the only team to capture tag team gold in all three of the biggest promotions of the eighties after relieving the Nasty Boys of the straps at Summerslam '91.

And whilst their star would gradually fade throughout the late nineties and early naughties, thanks in no small part to a number of horrible booking decisions, the Road Warriors are still revered as one of the greatest tag teams in history five years after the untimely death of Hawk in 2003.

THE BRITISH BULLDOGS

Born and bred in the little-known town of Golborne in North West England, cousins Davey Boy Smith and Tommy 'Dynamite Kid' Billington were one of the most inspirational, influence tag teams in the history of pro-wrestling.
