I caught you looking at me last night
And for a second, I thought you knew.
I thought you were seeing inside my mind,
Seeing everything I couldn't say
But, unexpectedly, you smiled.
You didn't see it at all.
When there's a silence between us,
I want to fill it with the words I need to say,
Words that catch in my throat-
A suffocating knot of emotion-
Words that are silenced by your fingers
Tracing a path through my hair.
Your movements stop the words forming on my lips.
We were driving in the car today
And, lost in my own thoughts,
A stray tear escaped down my cheek.
You looked at me and I thought you saw.
I thought you saw the truth I try to hide,
The words I cannot say,
But you only smiled.
You didn't see it at all.
