Which is better for foreign language films, dubbing or subtitles? I would definitely say subtitles are better for foreign language films.
One main reason why I say subtitles are better is because when I lived in Atlanta, Georgia my step-sister lived with me for a year.Holly is deaf in one ear. She really loved foreign language films because
the films that she wanted to watch and could only watch had to have subtitles and not dubbing, since she is partially deaf. She especially liked the films that had French subtitles. The subtitles were great for my sister, Holly.
My step-sister, Holly inspired me to enjoy seeing more foreign language films with subtitles.I have seen several foreign language films with dubbing and I haven't enjoyed too many with dubbing.Foreign films with dubbing and subtitles are alright. But the better foreign language film for me would be the film with subtitles.
During the films with dubbing I concentrated more on the dubbing to see if it was in balance with what they were actually saying at the time. Most of the time when I watched foreign films, the dubbing would be off. When the dubbing is not in its correct translation. I don't enjoy the foreign language film as much as I would if it had subtitles. The subtitles are just clear and concise. It's so much easier to follow and understand.
I have seen some amazing foreign language films from various foreign countries. The Spanish foreign film Volver,The French foreign film The Women, the Chinese foreign film,The House of Flying Daggers, and the Italian film, Life is Beautiful all had subtitles and 3 ended up winning awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
Foreign language films with subtitles are so much easier to understand.
I think it is great that the United States choose to show as many foreign language films as they do. We can all learn a lot from other countries. And when foreign countries showcase
their particular country and their culture in a foreign language film in dubbing or subtitles; especially in subtitles, it can bring our world a little bit closer. In that way, we can be more understandable,be more appreciative, and be more respectful to their culture and people.
I assume in other foreign countries they show American film and have subtitles and dubbing while they watch American film. I wonder if the people from the other countries that watch foreign language film laugh like I do when watching a film with dubbing that is not in it's correct timing in the film. I would sure hope that they would prefer foreign language film with subtitles over dubbing.
So for me, subtitles for foreign language films are definitely better than dubbing.
