Worldwide suicide rate on the rise in prisons

The number of prisoners who killed themselves in jail rose significantly in 2007. In UK for instance, the Justice ministry confirmed that there were 92 aparent self-inflicted deaths in England and Wales in the year ended 2007.In Africa however, the record is much more than a thousand.

In UK prison suicide records indicates that there are almost more than 40% higher figures than what was obtained in 2006.The prison officials in the UK says the number of apparent suicides in jail rose from a low 67 in 2006 and 28 in 2005.The record number in recent years has been 95 deaths in both 2004 and 2002.The vast majority,84 were men and 41 remanded prisoners made up the single largest group.7 under-21 young offenders took their own lives. The youngest of these is thought to be 15-year old found hanged in November 2007.

In the UK ,there was a significant rise in the number of foreign prisoners apparently taking their own lives-this number was put at 23 compared with 6 in 2006.
4 people on indeterminate sentences for public protection and 19 on life sentences were among the deaths recorded in 2007 .The figure shows that, while 92 people killed themselves in UK in 2007,more than 100 others were resuscitated after self-harm incidents that would have led to death.

In poorer countries of the world however, especially in Africa, the main responsible factor for prison suicide has been the poor Prison conditions. In most countries of Africa,a prison that is supposed to accommodate not more than a hundred people will normally contain more than 200.Inmates eat poor food, malnutrition has always been a major problem -most inmates in African prisons eat less than twice a day and poor sanitary conditions make them fell sick more frequently.Thats why convict5ed prisoners in Africa always come out prison having much more criminal tendencies. They become more hardened and they commit much more crimes than ever. These factors are enough for some prisoners to terminate their own lives

It is time world governments look into Prison welfare and ensure proper sanitary conditions in prisons. This is the only way out of continous prison suicides worldwide.
