"Why should the world care about the environment in places like Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Rwanda?" is an attempt by the persons framing this series of articles to make clear that damages to the environment are occurring in this area of the world. If anyone raises their head from the workaday in front of them and looks about, it is strikingly clear that damage is being done to the environment in almost any area of the world you can recall.
For instance, China has developed so severe an atmospheric pollution, tourists coming back complain about irritated eyes, congestion in the nose, sinus and lungs so severe it prevented enjoyment of the trip. In India many of the same problems exist, but the drinking water situation is becoming very severe in most major metropolitan areas. Eastern Europe has similar problems with a range of degrading environmental problems affecting a wide range of the population. Those areas afflicted with conflicts based on religious aspects of their culture seem to suffer the most.
We could continue to catalog the problems occurring here and there on various continents, but of what value? We all know they exist to some degree of similarity with the three areas we are looking at: Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Rwanda. There are differences in the problems that each region of the world continues to experience, but it truly can be said this past century of our time has experienced the most astounding progress and the most debilitating environmental damages.
I think it would help if we could imagine the round world reduced to the size of a ball that we could hold in our hands and turn about. By turning it about we would notice the spots on the worlds surface that would appear like spots, acne's, moles, cancers. These areas need some attention to return them to their former level of life support.
Let us look at a relatively simple problem of degrading soil, noted throughout Africa, but in particular in central Africa. Here the soil is losing its cover crop of grass, the rains are not being absorbed and held in the ground. Annual rains are causing massive movements of earth from one location to another and the top soil to support the tropical plants and life is disappearing with it.
To restore the grass, so that the soil is held in place, to provide grazing for the animals native to that region would not be a major problem. Why isn't it being done? The politicians of the area are fighting for supremacy, slaughtering the animals and humans, so as to dominate
