Dealing with abusive bosses

I don't like dealing with abusive bosses. I will tell you straight out that I have had more than my share of abusive self righteous, I don't make mistakes and everyone else does, not good enough, prejudicial people who were bosses that shouldn't of been. But because they got the job done they were kept in there positions, untouched and not even phased. Didn't matter who they were stepping on or how they were stepping on you, if they achieved what they were set out to do when they got hired, they were considered to have done a good job.

Dealing with the abuse is a selective thing. Short of being in the military, if you have any self esteem, I just don't believe being a boss over someone justifies talking down to them or belittling them for their lack of experience or education or culture or anything. The military is trying to condition a person and some of that is to help develop that very attitude of tough exterior so a persons has the ability to be stronger in character. But in a civilian job, if you don't have strong character going into a job, you will find yourself being subject to all kinds of pit falls and land mines that can affect you and your attitude towards a career for the rest of your life. I have always looked at the job and what I was required to do in the job description and constantly compared it to what was being asked of me or how the job was being explained. If it didn't fall in the guidelines of the job description I would question the validity of what I was being asked to do. If I didn't get the training that I felt was needed I would question why not. Abuse from a boss can be more than harsh words and a bad attitude, it can be having the very tools you need to do your job being kept from you.

The United States and State Governments, in general have created labor laws that clearly spell out the appropriate guidelines for employee - employer interactions. We do have rights and so seldom are those rights exercised because of a company not backing up the fundamental premise of what the labor laws are established for. Equal opportunity to work. You get a boss or a manager on an ego trip and someone who loves to be a jerk to people it becomes a social game with the power of the your job and livelihood being at the mercy of someone who is getting away with unlawful actions. Intimidation becomes a real thing. But personality clashes will always be present and the fairy tale vision of every job has a silver lining is just not there.
