3. Surgery:
Surgery is sometimes resorted to as a treatment for pain. It is a relatively rare method of dealing with pain compared to other modes of treatment. Surgery to relieve pain could be relatively minor surgeries such as repairing damaged joint tissue through small incisions made on skin. Or it could be complex major surgeries such as joint replacement surgeries where the diseased joint is completely replaced by artificial joints.
4. Alternative therapy:
*Acupuncture It may reduce moderate pain for some people. It is commonly used to relieve joint pain and arthritis pain and sometimes other forms of chronic pain like back pain.
*Alternative exercises like Yoga and Tai Chi are said to be beneficial to some people to get rid of joint pain and chronic pain.
*Massaging - It can be done by the sufferer or by someone who is trained to give massages. When done properly, it helps to ease the pain for some people.
5. Physical relaxation:
Physical relaxation, though important, is often overlooked in treating pain.
6. Get enough sleep - Sleep help to rest your body and reduce pain and swelling after injuries and in disease.
7. Low impact exercises such as walking, biking and swimming can help reduce pain. Too much of exercise can add pain especially to hurting joints.
8. Warm baths help to ease off joint pain for many people. You may feel much better after taking a nice warm bath.
9. Psychotherapy is an important aspect of treatment of chronic pain. It will improve your sense of well being and reduce subjective discomfort caused by pain.
10. Practice relaxation People who are in pain are understandably stressed physically and emotionally. Relaxation methods such as praying and hypnosis ease stress and enable to manage pain and live life better.
11. Self-care techniques:
*Occupational therapy is helpful in relieving chronic pain. It teaches how to do ordinary tasks without hurting you.
*Behavioral adaptation in the form of dietary compliance, reduction of weight and stopping smoking helps to ease chronic pain. Stopping smoking helps because then your body is able to deal with ailments in a better way. Nicotine in cigarettes makes some medicines less effective for you.
12. Think positively Discarding the thought of pain as an ordeal you have to endure will help increase your self-esteem and not let pain rule your life.
The number of pain relieving methods may be many, but for the person who actually suffers from pain, it is regrettable that sometimes none of the methods work as desired. Before you start therapy for your pain, or even while you are continuing it, you should not hesitate to discuss all your doubts with the treating doctor.
