might find it easier to express a little milk first in order to soften the nipples before latching her on again. Around this time you may become aware of a hot tingling feeling in your breasts as the feed begins. This is the milk let down reflex and a good indication that you are feeding well.
Most women suffer some degree of nipple soreness during the first week. This is probably inevitable as hopefully your nipples are not usually subjected to that amount of suction! However, truly sore and painfully cracked nipples are almost always caused by poor positioning and attachment. If you think your baby isn't on the breast properly, don't allow her to continue sucking. Instead gently break suction by inserting your little finger into the side of her mouth, reposition her and start again.
Don't worry about weight gain. If positioning is good, you are relaxing while feeding and your baby is not premature or unwell, then she should gain steadily. if you are a UK Mum, your midwife or Health Visitor will weigh your baby at intervals anyway. If you're in the USA or elsewhere, your family doctor or paediatrician will be able to reassure you that growth is normal.
The best news of all is that providing you are having a healthy and varied diet with approx an extra 400 calories per day, breast milk should provide all your baby's nutritional needs for the first 6 months. Enjoy a rewarding and satisfying experience!
