I remember like it was yesterday, standing at my mothers side as she said I do to the man of her dreams and the devil himself. They call him Terry, and my sister and I called him dad. My mother at the time of their marriage was 40 years old and he was just 25, but age was the least of our worries. Terry was a very talented and handsome musician. He could play the piano beautifully and was capable of talking his way out of anything; he had a way with words. He met my mother on the public transportation bus, and latched on to her from that day on. When they started dating and he met my sister and me, he used us as bait to real my mother's heart completely out the lake. If her kids disapproved he would have been gone, but unfortunately my sister and I fell in love. He was young, playful, talented, and he made my mom smile, which was more than enough for a 10 and 8 year old to want him around.
The first year of Terry being our step-father was wonderful and my mom was at her happiest. If I remember correctly, the first thing that came up missing was our house phone. We questioned Terry, and the truth revealed itself along with a few crocodile tears he shed. He was a drug user addicted to crack and he was married to my mother. He kept this secret so well, my mother felt betrayed and we couldn't understand why his family kept quiet.
It turns out that he had been sober for over one year prior to meeting my mom, and he claims he wanted to put that part of his life to rest, but that tiny piece of information would have changed everything; my mother would have not married him. She was freaking out inside, feeling like she put my sister and I in danger and she didn't know what to do. So being the beautiful God fearing woman that she is; she decided to stick by his side and be his wife, and we were his family. My mom worked two jobs, while he bang away on his piano with pipe dreams of being a famous producer. She sent him off to rehab with the hopes of a better life together. But people who know or live with crack addicts understand the process of healing the addicted person, and my family had no idea that his addiction
