Reflections: Valentine's Day and the seven deadly sins

Reflections: Valentines Day and the seven deadly sins

Valentine's Day is usually thought of as a romantic holiday to spend with your significant other and share gifts, but is there more to it? Does this erotic holiday evoke more than feelings of love and warmth? Yes, and that is the seven deadly sins.

The seven deadly sins are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. All of them are a part of the holiday. One person alone may not feel all of these sins on Valentine's Day, but someone somewhere experiences at least one of them on the celebrated day of love. Here's the breakdown:

LUST- Valentine's Day is the day of love and spending time with loved ones. It's also an acceptable day to go after someone you've had your eye on. If you've been watching someone from afar, imagining picnics and walking on the beach, you're lusting for someone.

GLUTTONY- Heart shaped boxes filled with chocolates is a delightful gift and it's quite difficult to stop from eating just one. So why not eat the entire box, you glutton?

GREED- When the gifts come in, or don't depending on your relationship status, are you content with what you received? Did he only give you half a dozen roses when he should have given you two dozen? Didn't you deserve more chocolates? And why didn't he propose to you with that beautiful expensive ring worth two month's salary? Let him know how you feel and he might not realize you're greedy.

SLOTH- While you're eating all those chocolates, you might as well lay around. There's no need to clean up the house, since you've spent all day getting pretty. Just take it easy. You wouldn't want to sweat off your mascara by actually vacuuming would you?

WRATH- For those who didn't receive a gift, a call, or even a cheap little valentine from the drug store, there is always anger. What if he dumps you so he doesn't have to get you a gift? Or did he dump you to date someone else? Let the blood boil in your veins and allow the rage to consume you. Then take it out on his car tires.

ENVY- While you're in the office and you see the cute girl down the hall receive flowers, don't you just want to throw up? Wish for flowers to get delivered to you. Pray that you are as pretty as she is. Wouldn't you love to have everything she has? This is enviable behavior shared by a lot of women on Valentine's Day.

PRIDE- Maybe you're the type of person who is above Valentine's Day. You don't need gifts or someone to spend the day with. You're proud and better than all those lovesick fools.

Do you fit into one of these categories? The correlation between a sweet and innocent day and the seven deadly sins are seamless. This Valentine's Day, keep in mind what can corrupt the soul and prevent unnecessary sins. Love and be loved and be happy.
