How to raise happy children in an unhappy world

be at that occupation and allow them to dream big.

Give them better explanations than "because I said so." If they are asking why they can't go play in the rain, tell them it's because it may start lightning and they could get struck. This goes for any situation. Children will listen if you talk to them. From my experience, they seem to shut down if you lecture or give them automated responses.

Understand that your child is not like you. He or she will not respond in the same way you did to certain events or situations. Experiment with different approaches and you're sure to find one that will work for your child.

Every child learns differently and develops at different rates. Don't hold one sibling next to the other competitively. Instead, encourage siblings to help the other progress and give them praise for their teamwork.

Instill a sense of a family unit. Tell your child that your family will always be together and be there for them. As they grow up and learn about divorce, explain it to them, but let them know they are deeply loved and will always have their family. This is a vital part of a healthy upbringing.

If you know about your ancestry, tell your children. Kids of all ages are fascinated with where they came from, so sit them down and tell them. Show them photos of their family members who are alive and deceased. Use an atlas to show where your family has lived and the other countries where your family is from.

It's important to teach your children daily and consistently. Teaching through your own actions shows your children that you back up what you say. Show your children that you practice what you preach and they will respect you deeply.

Children grow up fast enough, and the longer they hold on to innocence, the happier they will be. Once they are adults, they will know all about the world and how horrible things can be. Advocating positive thinking and nurturing a healthy trusting relationship will help children find and keep happiness all the way through adulthood.
