To think of our children growing up in an unhappy world is startling, but realistic. Every parent wants their child to be happy, so how do you achieve it? There is no overnight miracle drug, but with a little time and unconditional love, you can raise a happy child in an unhappy world.
Paying attention to your child can't be stressed enough. Take the time to listen to your child. The dishes will still be there, the laundry will still be there and that television show you're dying to watch is not nearly as important as your child.
Even though children have a habit of interrupting phone calls, your shower, and your own personal time (if you get any), they are more important than you. Letting them know that you put your child first and foremost instills a feeling of love far deeper than anyone can ever show them.
Religion is an important part of growing up. Teaching your child very early about God gives a child a sense of security. This security is necessary to happiness. When your child sees you living your life in according to God's Word and how you are also happy, your child will follow suit.
Limit your child's television time and monitor the shows they are watching. Many kids are comfortable sitting in front of cartoons or sit-coms for hours on end. Sometimes parents rely on the television to occupy their kids for a short time. If your kids are addicted to the television, try to wean them from it by filling their time with other activities. Why, you ask?
The news on television is inundated with war, crime, and is overall discouraging. Children who are constantly subjected to this can develop depression and a feeling of insecurity. The images on evening news broadcasts are not always appropriate for young viewers.
The celebrity gossip shows mostly highlight the stars that are not living a moral life. Many teenage girls are looking to these celebrities as role models. These entertainment shows can be quite provocative and since sex sells in this generation, that is mainly what they see.
Even if you think they are just watching a family channel, check out the show. There are many shows on these so-called "family" channels that have a lot of sexual innuendos and dirty conversations. Let's admit it; children don't need to be subjected to the majority of what's on television.
