Greatest NFL running backs of all time

by Summer Tyme

Created on: January 26, 2008

I loved watching Tony Dorsett. When he was on the field, I was in front of the television. In my opinion, he was the NFL's greatest running back of all time; and he is a nice looking man with or without the helmet covering most of his face.

Tony played for the Dallas Cowboys after being picked in 1977. He was their number one pick after having won the Heisman Trophy the previous year. And a great pick he was.

Tony Dorsett went to two super bowls, five NFC championships and four pro bowls. He made all NFL in 1981 and was the NFC rushing champion in 1982. His career totals were impressive with 12,739 yards rushing, 398 receptions and ninety one touchdowns.
He scored 546 points on his 91 touchdowns with 77 yards rushing, 13 receiving and 1 fumble return. He had 16,326 from the line of scrimmage.

He was rookie of the years in 1977 with twelve touchdowns and 1,007 yards. He racked up more than 1,000 yards in eight of his first nine seasons. The football year of 1981 was shortened by the strike, which kept Tony from making more than 1,000 that one year out of the first nine. And yet, that is the year he was all NFL. It was still his top year.

I was watching that day in 1983 when Tony ran for ninety-nine yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys were playing against Minnesota. Over-all the game was good, but when Tony got the ball and ran all the way down the field it was something to see. I couldn't stop saying, "Go, go go." It was one of the best Cowboy games I ever watched.

Tony made the game exciting just by being on the field. You knew that if he went in to the game, he would make a play. The ball would move and something good could and usually did happen. Even when the Cowboys didn't win, one would have to admit Tony had given his all. He and Roger Staubach made quite a two-man team within a great Cowboy team of that decade.

Tony played from 1977 until 1987 with the Cowboys and was traded to Denver for 1988 where he played one year before injuries took him out of the game. Twenty years ago, and I still recall the way he took the field. I was sorry to hear he wasn't going to be back. He was one of the better, most exciting reasons for watching the game.
