Each season of Apprentice has proven to be more entertaining than the previous and has quickly earned it a favorite show rating in my home. Who doesn't like seeing the upper echelon of society; those highly educated successful business people make the everyday mistakes of us common folk gritting through the daily grind of work life. You can turn off the television at the end of each episode secure in the knowledge that the money and time you saved foregoing that Harvard education was well kept.
In light of the recent writer's strike and a rapidly dwindling selection of new episodes on any front, my excitement for a new season of Apprentice was a bit exaggerated. It wasn't until about the fifth or sixth promo spot that I actually heard the words, "Celebrity Apprentice." What? Another reality show featuring has been stars of yesteryear to fill my precious viewing menu? My enthusiasm ended faster than a Pamela Anderson marriage.
Not ready to let go, my hopes were once again on the rise when I realized the genius of Mark Burnett and Donald Trump to bring together a unique blend of singers, actors, sports icons, and a Playboy centerfold. With the exception Omarosa, this cast could hold something for everyone. Is there anyone out there who hasn't had their fill of the overly exposed, overly acted Omarosa?
The first episode provided the faire of prior seasons by assigning a task that would test creative thinking and basic business savvy when the teams were given the challenge of selling the hotdogs on a street corner in New York. While team members debated locations, prices and assigned which celebrity would attract the biggest crowd, Gene Simmons quietly opened his little black book of celebrity millionaires and began calling on his friends to come out and pay exorbitant amounts for a hotdog, all in the name of charity, of course. Now that's star power. This season does have hope, I thought.
Unfortunately episode one was the peak of this season. What made it fun and unique has become the script of subsequent episodes. Celebrities are given a task. Half way through the task in what's become a battle of the black books, one of them pulls it out and calls somebody to come buy their way to a win. If the benefactors were more interesting than the cast member themselves, it might add a little bit of appeal to the show, but they don't. They too seem to be on the down side of fame and are willing to buy back another fifteen seconds.
Season Seven, Celebrity Apprentice has turned into nothing other than a high priced production of Dialing for Dollars. Dial me out of this one.
