How can we elect this season's best quarterback yet? Do you pick the winning boxer in the 11th round of a championship fight? Do you choose the winner in the ninth inning of the World Series when the team scores are tied? Are you ready to salute President Hillary Rodham Clinton? So, how can you elect the best quarterback until the Super Bowl is history?
At this moment, most people will choose as the top two guys, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Eli Manning of the New York Giants, simply because their teams will face each other in that big game. Of course, if Tom Brady can shed his cast ... and maybe clear up his love life ... in time to lead his team to a spectacular undefeated season, he will be, from a statistical point of view, the best quarterback of the season. And considering his brilliant all-around record so far, and future potential he'll certainly earn a pedestal in the Football Hall of Fame as one of NFL history's best.
I'm forced to list Eli as #2 on my list because his Giants have staggered to the Super Bowl and have an outside chance of winning all the marbles. Right? Wrong. It could happen, although it would first require Brady to break both legs and take a dozen time outs during the game to snuggle with former girlfriend and mother of his child, Bridget Moynahan, and current love, model Gisele Bundchen. Although Eli is certainly an excellent half of the fantastically talented Manning QB brothers, he had to struggle and scratch his way to the final game. OK, New York fans, keep your fingers crossed.
Some people believe Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys should be listed as one of the best quarterbacks of this season. Maybe the guy is improving, and will some day take his place as one of the most talented in the game. However, considering the way Jessica has been leading him around by the ... er ... nose, he is taking a lot of fan abuse, and we just may see him on next season's cartoon drama, "The Simpsons".
Therefore, if I had my druthers, I'd choose Brett Favre is the best quarterback of the season, and maybe the best QB of any season. So, he couldn't quite do it in the deep freeze of Green Bay, and he let the Giants slide past him with that hokey overtime field goal. That doesn't diminish he outstanding efforts this year, and all the years of his brilliant career.
At age 38, when most NFL stars have long ago limped into retirement to make TV commercials and do mumbling commentary at games, Favre broke all kinds of records this year. He threw 28 touchdown passes, making his grand total 241, an NFL record that has stood for 15 years. How any human can perform so competently on the rock-hard field in the ice bowl that is Lambeau Field has to be some kind of miracle. Maybe Walt Disney and Ted Williams were right in getting themselves frozen for posterity.
During his career, Favre won two Super Bowls and is always an inspiring leader on and off the field to his teammates. Through his outstanding performance this year, for a man his age, which in the bang and bash game of football is somewhat of a miracle of luck and conditioning, he proved that he is still the best there is. He could climb his pedestal in the NFL Hall of Fame right now.
I know everyone in Green Bay, and in many other NFL cities, will agree with me when I express my fondest hope that Brett will return next year and once more, win or lose, have an exciting and outstanding season.
