If Jafar, the genie from the fairy tale Aladdin, were to appear to me today and grant just ten wishes for 2008, yes I know one generally only gets three but this is my fantasy, I would tell him that I wished:
The Hollywood Writers would comeback from strike and bring a few good sitcoms with them. I wish the troops would come home from Iraq, the real estate market would comeback from its slump, and the Gas prices back to reality. I also wish, above all wishes, that the jobs would come back to America and bring with them quality merchandise and fair pay for a job well done. I wish that someone who can make a difference would come back to the White House and bring with them affordable health care. Finally, I wish for world peace.' Ok, world peace is a pipe dream, but remember that sense of patriotism and community after 911? People were really nice for a while. I wish that patriotism would make a comeback in 2008.
Everywhere you turn the economy is front-page news. There is much debate as to whether or not we are headed for recession, in a recession, or headed for depression. What ever the case may be, to many of us, it feels like a depression. If Americans have not lost there jobs or their house they are worried about having enough gas to get from their house to their job. Add to that the concern of needing health care or having a loved one caught up in the war, and the stress level is overwhelming. Don't look to Hollywood to help you out either. Gone are the days of coming home and unwinding in front of the tube with your family. Gone are affordable movie tickets, and if you can't afford cable TV you are really up a creek. That leads to my number one comeback pick for 2008.
Bring Back the Hollywood Writers:
I wish the Hollywood writers could comeback from strike. I have always liked game shows and over the past few years I have come to enjoy some of the quality reality television that is out there, but I have had enough. "American Idol", "Survivor", "Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" and "Don't Forget the Lyrics" are all good quality TV viewing. However, with exception to these programs, I find myself turning the TV off more and more often. Even the commercials are boring. I miss good commercials, and the longer this strike goes on the more people are going to turn off the TV. If it hasn't happened already, advertising revenues will drop as a result.
Ode to the All American Sitcom:
They are all gone; dare we say extinct? Oh how I long for the great sitcom, the sitcom
