I have played some very good role playing games. I have played D&D with the paper, pencil and dice. I have played D&D on the computer. I have played all of the Final Fantasy series, except number 11. I have played most of the Legend of Zelda games.
The greatest RPG I have played to date, is Final Fantasy III. For those of you who only picked them up once they went to the Play Station, there it is called FF VI. For those of you wondering about the discrepancy in numbers, three of the first six where not originally released in the United States.
What I love the most about FF III is how much control you have. Unlike so many other RPG's, in 3 you have complete control over who you have in your party. If you don't like the way a character plays, you can use another character. There are many to chose from.
What I love the most about that game though is that the greatest character in an RPG that I have ever played, (outside of a character created and played using the old dice and books), is in this game. I have my ultimate party of 4, and I would take my party up against any party you wanted.
Some consider the title of greatest character in the games to be up for grabs, but no one says the same character I do, until I show them what I know. Relm, (yes, the little 11 year old girl with the weakest of all the special abilities), is the greatest character I have seen yet to date.
Go ahead and team her up with anyone you want. I team her up with Sabin and Celes. I put a Genji Glove on all three of them. Give Celes the Atma weapon. Give Sabin the best claws available. Just make sure that Relm gets a Genji Glove and a hero's ring and watch her tear any opponent apart single handedly.
Give Relm this combination, and by the time she hits level 75, she is doing more damage each time she attacks, then anyone else will. By the time she hits level 90, she is doing 19,998 points of damage every time she attacks. What more can you ask for, and this is the one character every walk through I have ever read says is the weakest character ever created for these games.
My second most favorite RPG, is the Zelda that came out for the Supper Nintendo. What I liked about it above all the other Zelda's, was the story line, and the challenge. Yes, it was tricky trying to figure out where many things where in the game, but it provided hours of entertainment.
After that, it is to close to call for me between the Call of Duty games and Freedom Fighter. All are fun to play, and provide challenging entertainment. They are also first person which I love. I consider the fact that most games are not first person to be the biggest drawback of most RPG's, including the Final Fantasy's.
