Having stayed abroad few years and traveled to other countries , I would say that crossing the street in India is not all that easy. There are no traffic signals on most roads to help pedestrians like in a developed country. Since India is my home country, I will share some tips to cross Indian roads.
Tip 1: Look to both sides and ensure it is safe to cross:
Crossing in India is really stressful and tedious for the young and the old. With 200 -300 new vehicles hitting roads each day, crossing will be really difficult. Vehicles could come from either direction. With narrow roads, one must expect vehicles to come from either direction. If you are the only one to cross, wave your hand before you try to cross.
Tip 2: Avoid crossing alone if possible:
Do not cross the road alone if possible. Try to cross with the crowd. Even though you could be stamped on legs and hit by others, it is relatively safe to cross that way. As a foreigner one may not feel comfortable being in the crowd, but in India that seems the best option. Population is the strength in India and being with a larger crowd to cross the roads is the best option.
Tip 3: Cross the road with flyovers:
Few roads in cities have flyovers. Try to use it, even though many Indians avoid that. It is easy and only problem would be to climb up and down a few steps.
Tip 4: Use autos to cross the road:
If you are left alone to cross a big busy city road, use autos. They are cheaper. One can take return autos or share autos to do that. They are cheaper as fares will be less than half of the regular fare.
Tip 5: Walk parallel to the vehicles through the sideways:
Walk parallel to motor vehicles and find the best place to cross the road. Do not cross the road at junctions. They can be pretty dangerous especially in areas where four roads meet each other at junctions.
Tip 6: Do not trust the zebra crossings:
In India, plenty of people violate traffic rules. Do not think zebra crossings are pretty safe to cross. Before you cross wave your hand and make sure that the vehicle is slowing down from a distance, before you cross.
Last but not the least, call upon your God. Even if you are careful, others may hit you.
Only you mighty protector can help. Follow these simple tips and cross roads in India with peace of mind.
