Dog breed: Doberman Pinscher

Doberman Pinschers are widely known as a watchdog, with good reason. Dobermans have a elegant appearance due to their broad, muscular, proud carriage. They are a medium sized dog with all the power of a larger breed. Don't be fooled by the appearance of this magnificent animal they are very strong with excellent stamina and speed.

Dobermans are a exceptionally intelligent breed hailing from Germany around the 19th century. If you have ever owned one you already know this is a dog who is constantly watching, learning, and thinking. These dogs are also determined, loyal and fearless.

Dobermans are averagely about 26 inches high and 60 to 70 pounds, with a square shaped body and a wedge shaped head. They come in two main colors: black and tan or red. With a smooth, short, thick coat. This breed does require some body modifications to the tail and ears. Within the first week of life a doberman puppy will have it's long wiry tail docked. Dobermans will naturally try to hold their ears upright, around 4-6 months of age you will need to crop their long floppy ears.

Some say they get the name pinscher due to their scissor like bite. With 42 perfectly placed teeth they pack a bite like no other. These teeth will pinch and cut your skin at the same time, thankfully dobermans do not lock their jaws like other breeds do. The attack style is more like a game they seem to enjoy playing. They bite and run, bite and run. Do not misunderstand though they don't run far, just out of the victims reach. Their speed is lighting fast, making them hard to catch or grab. Dobermans usually appear friendly when you first enter their home, but they are merely watching you. They tend to make a informed decision before they attack.

Dobermans are a even tempered dog. Due to the widespread association with the guard dog image people believe them to be brutes. This is simply not true, unless the dog has been subject to specialized or cruel training. They tend to be friendly, obedient, alert, and energetic. They typically are not vicious or aggressive, they are more loving and people-orientated. This breed loves to play. They are affectionate and prefer physical attention or closeness. They love to play with other animals but are not very sociable with strangers. Sometimes they may appear to be aloof and friendly to strangers fooling you into believing your dog is a big baby. Do not be so naive to believe the game your dog is playing, they are feeling out the situation. They are very protective
