Symptoms of food allergic responses

Food allergies can be a very serious medical issue for many people. It is estimated that up to 5% of children at approximately 1 to 2% of adults will have some sort of food allergy in their lifetime. Symptoms of food allergies can range from relatively minor annoyances, to potentially life-threatening problems. It is also important to distinguish between an intolerance to food, and a true allergy.

Food allergies are mediated by antibodies, which are produced by your immune system. When you eat a food which you are allergic to, your immune system creates a chemical known as IgE. IgE is a type of antibody which is used by your immune system to attack foreign materials. The first time you are exposed to the allergen, your immune system becomes primed. Any subsequent exposure to the same food, will result in the production of antibodies, which will cause the symptoms of the allergy.

Most allergic reactions will happen within an hour of consuming the food which causes the response. Some of the most common foods which children tend to be allergic to include egg whites, wheat, cow's milk, and peanuts. Peanuts can be highly allergenic, and a peanut allergy typically will persist throughout a person's life. Adults who are allergic to a food will commonly be allergic to shellfish, other types of fish, and peanuts as well.

Symptoms of Food Allergies

There are very specific symptoms related to most food allergies. A person can suffer from hives, vomiting or diarrhea. Asthmatic reactions are common, which includes wheezing and shortness of breath. A rash (known as eczema) is also quite common in children who have asthmatic reactions to food.

A runny nose is commonly associated with food allergies. The lips, throat and mouth can become red and swollen. Abdominal cramping is also seem on occasion.

Food Intolerance

In addition to true allergies, a simple intolerance to various foods is common as well. Although not true allergies, many of the symptoms related to a food intolerance will mimic an allergy, and can be quite frustrating to deal with. The primary difference between a true allergy and an intolerance is the involvement of the immune system. Intolerance to a food will not activate the immune system, while an allergy does.

Chocolate, alcohol, and some cheeses can oftentimes cause migraine headaches in people who are susceptible to migraines in the first place. Some people have difficulty digesting wheat, which can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and irritate their bowels. This
