rings not your thing? You may want to consider a barbell, stud or a nail, a straighter piece of jewelry.
As described above, a classic barbell is a straight piece of metal with two round pieces of metal at the end. One or both pieces of metal screw off, allowing the jewelry to be removed. The barbell is usually straight but can also be bent slightly to allow for a minor curve. Just as is true with the curved barbell, the major advantage to this piece of jewelry is the ease with which it can be removed and changed. The major disadvantage is the problem with keeping it clean and nice looking, and its bulkiness. A straight barbell or one which is only slightly curved has no bead issues to consider, so there is no real decorative factor beyond the barbell look itself; this is probably why it is usually not chosen for the nostril. However, if you like the look of the classic barbell with its round metal ends and the ease of changing your jewelry, the barbell nose pierce may be for you.
Another straight nose piercing option is the stud. This is, in a way, a holdover from the early days of the piercing boom, when body piercing was transitioning and becoming trendier but still not trendy enough for supplies and know-how to be widespread. This meant that those doing the piercing were not always knowledgeable enough to know that piercing the nose with an ear-piercing gun and stud was not the best idea. Honestly, a stud is not the best option for the nose and all of its advantages can easily be met by the nose nail or bone. The stud should be avoided, always for the initial piercing (which should never be done with a gun), and generally for wearing as its back is basically set up for accumulation of guck inside the nose. Avoid the stud.
Now, some piercers may pierce with some sort of nail that has a back. This kind of back is almost always smooth and quite different from the kind of stud that goes in an ear. If a piercer is reputable and knows their business, they should know how to provide their clients-especially those getting new pierces that need to heal-with jewelry that can be kept clean.
Another non-ring option for the nose pierce is the nose nail or screw. The nail is a straight piece of metal, usually intended just for the nostril as it is asymmetrical with one piece that is decorative and shows outside. Some nails have the non-decorative ends thin and some sort of holder to keep the jewelry in, while others simply bend inside the nose to keep the piece in-this
