part is placed over the thinner inside portion, and then the ring is pushed together. The ring then appears "seamless."

One disadvantage to wearing this kind of jewelry is that there is always the potential for irritation of the piercing, even after the healing process. This is because the place where the actual tiny seam where the ring comes together is rubs the pierce some each time the ring moves through the pierce, and the ring always moves. There is no way to stop the movement, so the rubbing will take place; whether or not this will bother you personally comes down to your individual body's temperament. Another disadvantage is that there is no way to decorate the ring with beads at all.

However, this last "disadvantage" is an advantage to many! Some people crave the streamlined look of *only* a ring in their nose, and if you do, this is the perfect piece for you.

Finally, curved barbells are another "ring look" option for the nose. This is a barbell-one straight piece of metal with two round pieces of metal that screw on and off at either end-that has been bent into a ring. It has a gap between the round metal balls with just enough space for a bead to be "popped" in and out if the wearer desires. Without the bead the curved barbell looks like a very curved horseshoe or an almost complete circle with two metal balls at the ends of the bar piece. When the bead is added it sits in between the metal balls and can be their same size or, usually, larger (it would be unusual to find a bead that could be smaller and still stay put).

Disadvantages to the curved barbell include the fact that there are more round pieces-either two or three-in the nose. This means that there are more pieces to get in the way. Also, more nose debris can get stuck in between these areas and in the screw threads of the curved barbell.

On the other hand, the curved barbell is far easier to change than a captive bead ring. This is because you rarely require a tool to do the changing; instead, you can simply pop out the bead and unscrew one of the metal ends, and then take out the ring. The curved barbell also has an attractive look to it that is unique, and since you can "pop" different colored beads in between the metal ends with ease, you can have a new looking nose ring daily if you like with this kind of jewelry. If you like a look that changes and a ring style, the curved barbell might be right for you. This is my personal favorite for the "bull-nose" or septum type of nose piercing.
