How to accelerate the speed of your PC

The speed of your PC depends on three factors
- The Hardware
- The maintenance and settings and
- The software

To accelerate the speed of an existing PC, one must consider action plan from all these 3 factors.

(A) FROM HARDWARE POINT OF VIEW:

1. THE RAM:

For majority of office and home applications, unless and until the computer is predominantly used for high-end graphic intensive gaming and any other number-crunching applications, currently used CPUs of clocking speed 1 to 2 GHz are more than adequate; any higher CPU speeds are not going to significantly accelerate machine speed.

On the other hand, adding more RAM to the existing PC is one of the best options to accelerate your PC and you can very perceptibly visualize the improvement. Perhaps, when you bought your PC, you would have gone mostly by the "minimum recommended" RAM capacity and configured the system accordingly. Over the couple of years, the RAM prices have definitely come down. If your PC is presently with P-IV processor with 128 or 256 MB RAM, add another 256 MB straight away (or more, if possible and if the system has capacity to intake). If you have Dual Core processor, you can add upto1 GB total RAM. If you can afford, you can go up to 2 GB.

CAUTION: Check the availability of Slot Space to add the ram in your PC. The ram type should be same (i.e. if your existing ram is DDR2 you must add DDR2 ram only). The "clocking speed" of the existing ram and the added ram should match. (If not, the slower one will be in effect; this may reduce the optimal speed addition). Consult your technician before adding the ram.

2. THE HARD DISK:

Another aspect of speed is the speed of rotation of Hard disk. A hard disk with higher RPM can speed up your PC. If you can afford to and if your hardware configuration has no other restriction, go for a new and latest Hard disk with higher capacity. It would be ideal if you can make the new HDD bootable (which means you have to reinstall operating system and all programs) and make your old one secondary (and use it for storing back ups, less frequently assessed data etc).

(B) FROM MAINTENANCE & SETTINGS POINT OF VIEW:

1) Free up Hard disk space:

If your hard disk is cluttered with more and more files, the slower will be the system. So make it a habit to remove unwanted files from the hard disk regularly. In Windows XP, you can do this by clicking Start-> Programs -> Accessories -> system tools -> disk clean up and following up further. You can clean up temporary internet files,
