Red carpet style secrets

Dressing celebrities like Keira Knightley and Jennifer Gardiner, Rachel Zoe has changed the face of Hollywood by bringing glamour back. No longer are celebrities parading their bare stomaches and other assets on the red carpet; instead, flowing gowns and well chosen jewels rule. If you are looking to create your own red carpet, follow Ms. Zoe's lead and and look for a timeless silhouette.

In general, stay away from poofy, prom style gowns and look for something that hugs the body. Mermaid style gowns are nice because they fit close around the body and then flare away from the legs creating a very womanly shape. Also, look for a gown that has interesting details like an asymmetrical neckline, ruching, or a train.

Often overlooked is the fabric of the gown. Don't choose polyester blends and be cautious about velvet because it crushes when you sit. The fabric should contribute to the style and fit of the gown and should fall smoothly across your body.

When wearing a formal gown do not forget proper under garments. Brands like Spanx, which offer Lycra body shapers, are the secret underneath celebrity gowns. These shorts and pantyhose help to conceal any tummy or thigh issues.

Another Hollywood secret is the use of double-sided tape. It provides security should you have any gaps in your gown that might reveal too much or if you have straps that you have trouble keeping up. Some good brands are Hollywood Fashion Tape and Victoria's Secret.

Accessories are another key to creating the perfect Red Carpet look. Choose one piece of fabulous jewelry to wear. Chandelier earrings or a choker are good choices for a strapless dress. Bracelets work nicely for a short-sleeved or sleeveless gown. Remember to wear only one statement piece so that you do not overwhelm your gown, and stay with one metal color in order to complete your look.

When it comes to shoes, find a pair that you would be comfortable standing in for long periods of time. If you are set on 4 inch-plus heels, use inserts to cushion the balls of your feet. Dr. Scholl's and Victoria's Secret both make these foot savers.

Finally, to complete your look, find a small clutch or evening bag that compliments your gown. Now is not the time for an over-sized, slouchy, or leather bag. Structure is key to maintaining an elegant look. A tiny, crystal-studded, clutch is always a winner.
