On living at home with your parents

This is something I noticed between the Asian culture and the Western culture:

In the Asian culture, a lot of people live with their parents until they get married; some people still live with their parents even after getting married. This is because Asians are usually more family-oriented and they would save money when they live with their parents. It is acceptable for an older person to be living with their parents. When a married couple is living with their parents or parents-in-law, the grandchildren would be taken care of by the grandparents. Some people are supportive of this; whereas others believe that your parents already did their job by taking care of you so it is now your turn to look after your own child.

In my hometown Singapore, due to the scarcity of land, the cost of living is very expensive. It is very difficult to live on your own with your starting off salary. Most people live in government flats that cost at least a few hundred thousand dollars. Therefore, if you live in a private estate such as a condominium or a house, it is a very big deal. Added to that, since the government does not want the roads to be too jammed, cars are also very expensive. Therefore, if you own a car, it is a very big deal.

In the Western culture, a lot of people move out of their parents' home after they turn eighteen or twenty-one. I am not referring to those who left home to pursue a higher education. I am talking about those who found jobs and are paying for their accommodation. It is surprising how they can pay for their own accommodation with their starting off income. But then again, where they are, land is cheaper and labour is more expensive. And if an older person is living with their parents, it may be frowned upon.

I just wonder, if you are not a high income earner, how do you survive in an expensive city such as London or New York City? Do you swallow your pride and live with your parents? Or do you live in a dingy area and bear with it?

I am an adult who is living with my parents. I went abroad to study when I was sixteen. After four years of overseas education, I returned home. While I was away, I learnt to be independent. I was independent in every way except financially.

What about you? Are you living with your parents? If you are not, who is and how are you paying for your accommodation?
