In the far west of Wales next to the Pembrokeshire coast lies the smallest city in Britain. Mystical St Davids has a population of only 1500 inhabitants but was granted city status in 1995 by the Queen.

The small town is steeped in history. This was the place where the patron saint of Wales (St David) was born and established much of his work. The magnificent cathedral here dates back to the 12th century. This Historic structure that has a distinctive pink and Grey color is built from local stone.

Next to the cathedral lies the The Bishop's Palace, this was once a fortified stately
residence. As the mist rolls in from the sea these ruins become a very atmospheric place to visit.

St Davids is a very picturesque little place to visit, there is an abundance of fine gift shops, cafes, traditional tea shops, guest houses and hotels. Visit The Sampler Coffee Shop
in Nun Street near to the old square for a traditional Welsh Specialty of a pot of tea with
Bara Brith (fruited teabread) and welsh cakes (round griddle cakes with sultanas or currants).

St Davids is surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery and clean pollution free beaches. Nearby Whitesands Bay won a European blue flag award.

Also nearby is the nature reserve of Ramsay Island. There are boat tours to this fascinating island all year round.

When visiting St Davids take a 4 mile detour south near the shores of St Bride's Bay to the strangely named parish of St Elvis with only 44 inhabitants. St Elvis consists of 2 farms and also a neolithic burial chamber that has the name 'St Elvis Cromlech'. St Elvis was claimed in 11th century writings to have performed the baptism of St David. If you consider that nearby are The Preseli hills it makes you think!

So, when visiting Wales in the future travel west down the A40 to as far as you can to
Haverfordwest. Then head along the A487 to the the smallest city in Britain. This place is a must visit for every tourist to this area!

Whilst you are here why not visit nearby Fishguard with its spectacular harbor. And Just south of St Davids is the small fishing village of Solva. If you opt for a self catering vacation at one of the many rental cottages in this area buy your provisions in the county town of Haverfordwest where there are many shops and supermarkets which will cater for all your needs.

If you do intend to travel further east down the A487 to To Fishguard there are many small detours you could take to places that are well worth a visit like the tiny coastal village of Porthgain.
