New babies are highly susceptible to colds and congestion. For the past nine months they've lived cocooned in an environment where the temperature is consistent and natural. Upon leaving this environment they now have clothes being changed regularly, wet and dry environments and air temperature that changes often.
A newborn baby has little defense against common germs found in any environment due to having little immunity. This is why they often get colds in the first few months of life.
The problem with infants is that when they're born, their kidneys have not yet fully developed. Infant cold remedies and medicines need to be used only at a doctors advise due to the kidneys not being able to process the medicine. Not heding this advice can put your infant in danger.
I know how awful a cold in a baby can be. They snuffle and wheeze, have watery eyes and a cough and their breathing can be irregular. These symptoms are terrible when they happen to an adult, imagine how a baby feels when they're feeling like this.
But there are some natural ways a mother can relieve their child's congestion. All three of my children have had colds within the first dew weeks or months of life and this is how I've eased their discomfort.
1) HUMIDIFIERS AND VAPORIZES
These items are very useful to have around young babies. Vaporizers plug into the wall and by using water and heat, create steam within a baby's environment. Steam breaks down the mucous found within the nose and chest, allowing your baby to breath better.
Most come with a decongestant menthol aide such as Vicks to also help break up the mucous to ease babies congestion.
You could also hold your baby in the bathroom while you have hot water running in the bath or shower. Steam will be dispersed through the air so your baby can inhale it. Run the hot water for approximately 10-15 minutes and have your baby sit on your knee in the room. This can be done about 4-5 times per day until their congestions clears.
2) MENTHOL PLUG INS
Plug ins is a fairly new concept used to help congestion. They contain a little tab or disk that is inserted into a devise that plugs into the wall. The electivity heats the devise and sends an aroma of menthol or camphor through the air. I usually plug them in, put my baby within the room and close the door so the scent is through the room.
3) UNWRAPPING BABY
You would think by holding your baby close when they're not feeling well will make
