Secrets to developing as a dancer when you have two left feet

to music - as much of it as you can. Whenever you get the chance, try clapping along in time to it. If you have videos of bands, play them watching the drummer. Try to clap along to his rhythm (because you know he's got it right!). Ask a rhythmic friend to practice clapping in time to music with you. It will take time - be patient.

I'm sorry to say, but there are some people who genuinely have no rhythm - and if you're truly in that category, then perhaps dancing really is beyond you. If you can't keep time to the music, no matter how well you do the steps, it can't really be called dancing - and you'll never be able to join in with other dancers. But bear in mind it can take months to get a glimmer of what rhythm is all about, so don't give up too easily!

My last point - which should perhaps have been at the start - is to choose the right style of dance. If you think you have two left feet, then don't enrol for ballet or flamenco. Start simple, with social dancing. Check out what is in your area - Ceroc, Swing, Lindy Hop and salsa all have easy steps and although they're dances for couples, the classes are usually set up so you don't need to bring your own partner. Or you could try square dancing, barn dancing, Scottish country dancing or line dancing. All of these will get you used to keeping time to the music and remembering routines of steps. If you prefer a solo dance style, belly dancing is a good option because it's possible to put a dance together with just a few simple moves and if you're shy about learning with others, there is a whole range of DVD's so you can start learning at home.

Once you've gained confidence with these simpler dance styles - if you still dream of becoming a ballet dancer (or Beyonce) then by all means, go for it!
