The basics of creating a website

The world wide web is a great tapestry of humanity. People interacting, making statements, selling their widgets, helping each other, passing a little virus around from time to time, playing games, sending mail, learning stuff, dating, dieting and discourse! What a place! Do you feel like you've been looking in for long enough and it's time to grab a piece of internet real estate? Your own web site! What's that about?

PURPOSE:
That's the first thing you'll need to ask. What is your web site going to be about? What do you want to communicate or provide? What outcome will you desire? Do you want a place to display your art, your photos, your poetry and your wit? Are you hoping to make your fortune in internet commerce? Is there a cause you've been wanting to promote or a person you've been wanting to honor?

PLAN:
Next you'll need to plan your web-site. Never mind just yet where it will be hosted or what it will cost, all of that is easy once you know what you'd like to build. Don't hold back. If you think you need a hundred pages, or even thousands of pages, go ahead and plan the plan. Now that you are thinking about your proposed site, let's follow the adventures of an imaginary friend, Thelma, as she plans hers.

Thelma wants a web-site to honor the accomplishments of her family. Thelma is a photographer and she has shot some great portraits and action shots during the recent family reunion. Her Grandfather is a concert pianist and she has many recordings of his concerts. Her grandmother is a great cook and Thelma wants to pick her brain about some of her recipes. Uncle Jack is a football coach at a community college. Brother Tom is a swimmer, and Thelma's mom works as a secretary and Sunday School superintendent at large local Church. Thelma wants to include some of her mom's bible study outlines too.

It's a big family and there are lots of others she wants to feature but these will be the first ones. She knows she'll need a home-page, like a directory, with links to the rest of the pages. She will have pages for each individual, and she'll need pages for each recipe, recording, picture album, and narrative. Initially she thinks she'll have about 20 individual pages, 35 recipes, 20 recordings, 15 picture albums and 40 pages of text. That makes about 100 pages. She knows she will want to do much more but feels she will start with this.

Wow, what a project! Seems overwhelming. But the plan has been made. It's time to start building.

DESIGN:
Next Thelma must decide on
