Reflections: Why I enjoy summer

by Ambi

Aside from the sometimes too humid days, what's not to love about summer? Our mental state naturally alters in the presence of warm weather and it generally makes most people happy. I think most anyone can come up with one good summer memory that makes them long during the colder winter months.

Most of what I remember from my childhood is summertime memories of playing all day long outside. With the creativity and endless energy, I could find so many things to keep myself occupied. Often times it was making saltine cracker soup in my pretend kitchen on the back patio, or studying the ant hills in my yard, or just playing on the swing set with my sister and friends. We would also run around the whole subdivision or ride our bikes to the park and climb trees (which were also our pretend houses). Warm weather almost meant freedom to just be a kid with no limitations of bulky winter jackets and hats.

During summer, all of the flowers, trees, and grass are more alive than ever. The sky seems to the bluest this time of year and there is life just happening all around. Animals are at their most vital time and birds soar through the sky endlessly. Basically, the world is just at it's brightest point where everything works in peak condition and harmony. And this includes people.

Although there are plenty of outdoor activities all year long, summer seems to be the most enjoyable for me because the weather is just perfect. Again, I don't have to wear a sweater or other restricting clothes. I can be free in a tank top and capris, and my most favorite shoes, sandals. My feet can breath and I don't have to wear shoes with socks. It's the best time of year to go camping because even though the days can be hot, the evenings are cooler for sleeping. All of the parks are open so you can take a hike one day or go swimming the next. Just taking a walk is more pleasant. It's definitely the most enjoyable time of year to take a bike ride, and this also includes motorcycles and crotch rockets. For those with convertibles, it's prime. Let's not forget this is perfect weather for bonfires or having a cookout with your friends. I know I did a lot of that last summer and always had a great time.

I live near Milwaukee, WI so there are an abundance of summer festivals going on as well. The main one being Summerfest, which just wouldn't be the same with snow falling from the sky. But with our weather anything is possible.

Summer is my favorite season just because I feel great that time of year. I guess it's just the smell in the air, the liveliness surrounding me, the sun on my skin, and the freedom I feel. There's nothing like driving with your windows down and the wind brushing past you.
