There are numerous places where you can purchase RAM; however, once you buy the RAM, you will also need it installed inside your computer. If you are technically savvy, and feel comfortable installing new memory, both Tiger Direct (http://www.tigerdirect.com and "New Egg (http://www.newegg.com offer excellent prices on memory. In fact, these e-stores often offer prices to the general public at prices only slightly above wholesale.

If you do not feel comfortable working inside your computer, then you may want to make a visit a locally owned PC support store. You can purchase the memory there at an inflated price; however, there is a good possibility the store technician will install it for you free. Just make sure you ask if installation is included before you make the purchase. In some cases, even though it normally takes under two minutes to install memory, failure to get the installation included with the purchase can result in a company charging just as much (if not more) than the cost of the memory itself.

The second solution to increasing the amount of available RAM is to reduce the number of applets running. Though many of the applets running are installed to help you out, there are also many applets that can be surreptitiously installed to your detriment. These "bad apples" are collectively known as malware. This term includes spyware and adware, both of which may be accidentally installed while you surf the web.

To eliminate these bad applets, you will need to install yet another application. One of the top-rated malware removal applications is "Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.com. Another option is "AVG anti-virus. The advantage of AVG antivirus is that it now includes both an anti-virus software as well as a powerful anti-spyware application. Both Ad-aware and AVG are free for personal use.

There are other ways in which to speed up your computer; however, increasing the amount of RAM available and/or reducing the number of small "helper" applications will provide the greatest benefit. These are also two of the simplest solutions available.
