There are several ways that you can send gifts to soldiers in Iraq. First if you already know the soldier then all you need to do is decide what gifts you want to send. Remember that your soldier will need practical items. Things such as soap, shampoo, razors, deodorant and such. Also treats are great to send to soldiers in Iraq. Cookies are a good treat to send as they do not get easily destroyed in the shipping process.
Packages of jerky and summer sausage are also appreciated by soldiers. Just remember to send all beef jerky and none that contain pork to Iraq. Pork is not allowed whether it be in jerky or summer sausage. Board games or crossword puzzles are good for the soldiers as it allows them something to help occupy their minds while they are on some down time.
For those that do not know a soldier but still want to send gifts to soldiers over in Iraq, there are several organizations that you can join. One of the best ones is Soldier's Angels. Soldier's Angels will give you the name and address of a soldier that you are assigned to. Your job is to send the soldier a letter or post card once a week and at least two care packages a month. This care packages do not have to be expensive just small packages containing some practical items.
Packaging your gifts should be done with care. When I got into Soldier's Angels my local postal official told me to package that box up like Godzilla himself would be handling it. He was right because I got a letter back from my soldier telling me that the box looked so funny when it finally got to him. This became a running joke between me and my soldier. He would write describing the funny looking box as well as thanking me for gifts. I would write him back telling him that no matter how hard I tried, Godzilla would get the box every time. Luckily I took my post office worker's advice and the gift was unharmed despite the poor shape of the box.
As a final note though remember when sending gifts to your soldier whether you know him or her or not, to send extra. Soldiers share what they receive with others serving with them. So if you are sending shampoo send a normal household bottle so that the soldier can pass some out to others. When it comes to cookies or jerky and such send extra also as they will be sharing these yummy treats with their fellow servicemen and women. Special gifts they will hang on to though. I send my soldier a small bunny rabbit and candy for Easter last year. The bunny rabbit was closely guarded but the candy was shared with those around him.
