RETAIL RESPECT: OTHER SHOPPERS
People often reveal their true colors and their inner character when they shop. Sweet-speaking neighbors may turn into testy tyrants, when faced with a reluctant returns department, a crowded checkout line or other shopping frustrations. Why is it that we so quickly forget our manners, simply because we stand in a place of business?
If we look into the faces of those with whom we shop, we may realize that these are the folks with whom we share local citizenship and perhaps even club or church membership. We may not be as anonymous as we assume!
RETAIL RESPECT: A REQUIRED REALITY
Consider these possible shopping scenarios and how you might react:
1. Running late for a dinner date, you stop at the store to grab a new bottle of cologne. Unfortunately, the shelf is empty. The cosmetics counter clerk pages the stockroom staff, only to find that the supply is completely gone. How will you respond?
2. You hit the hardware store with just three items on your supply list, including a can of custom-color paint. However, the sales clerk in the paint department is assisting an elderly person, who seems to have dozens of questions. You cannot mix the paint yourself. What will you do?
3. At half-past noon, you're standing third in the checkout line, waiting to purchase a new pair of blue jeans. A young mother wheels a shopping cart into line behind you. In the cart is a toddler, who is throwing an all-out tantrum. Do you fume and steam with irritation at the intrusion? Did you ever have children? What happens when a young child becomes hungry and tired? Would it cost you dearly to utter a few friendly and encouraging words? Could you stand to let the frazzled mom step ahead of you in line?
IT'S ALL ABOUT RESPECT.
Whether we intend to spend $10 or $10,000 in a given retail store, we ought to treat other people with respect. From the diamond counter to the dollar store, people are people. How would we like them to receive us?
