Should children be taught religion

Of course kids should be taught religion. It's a critical part of most cultures.

But, the question I need to ask is WHICH religion? The usual answer that springs to many people's minds is Christianity. This has been a major topic of contention - especially when trying to get it taught in schools. Well, religion has no business being taught in school (unless it's a religious private school). If it's a public school that means that the tax dollars of non-Christians would be going toward the teachings of a religion that they don't even belong to. Religion is best taught by the parents - even if it's not the religion that the parents follow.

Of course, that would be next question: WHO should teach the children?
Many parents feel that they don't have time to teach their faith to children or they feel that they're not qualified to do so. So, they would prefer that it be taught by their church through Sunday School or whatnot. That's not a bad idea - of course, you're limiting your children to only one point of view. If you'd like your children to know about other faiths it's usually best to research them on your own - or at least get some books for your kids to learn from (more than just the Bible/Torah/Koran, please). You can find books about most religions at your local library, bookstores, or all over the internet. However, I beg you to not use Wikipedia. The information on that site can be vague, misconstrued, or completely wrong. I know that religion can also fit that same description, but we're trying to be part of the solution, not part of the problem here.

So, the final question is WHEN should children be taught religion?
That answer is simple. As soon as possible. Children's minds are filled with wonder and curiosity and this should be cultivated at an early age. Sure, it's okay to teach them about Jesus/Moses/Mohamed, but be sure to get them some books about the Ancient Egyptians, the Romans, Mesopotamians, and even the 'old religions' like Shamanism and Witchcraft.

Everything should be made available to children. If you try and tie them down to just one faith you are limiting their potential and this could hurt their mental and spiritual growth.
