While writing it is important to keep the question asked clearly in mind. Don't allow yourself to wander into other beckoning areas. There is more to Helium titles than meets the eye. Follow along with me in this article and I will share an important lesson I am only now learning. How fully do you understand its meaning? Are you absolutely sure your article that you have already written addresses this title; or is near enough, in your estimation?
While rating are you so intrigued, provoked, or so anxious to get in your two-cents worth, that you click on the pencil icon and write your thoughts down as they occur? Of course; sooner or later we all do this. Is this the best practice? Of course not, but writing is writing and writers are writers and part of the best part of this process is jumping right in with little forethought and having our say. This is no problem. When we come to our senses we can edit and leap frog our better version. Or better still, write a more lucid article once we have fully grasped the intent of the title to which we have added our article.
An example of this happened to me in the past hour. I now have a whole new attitude about titles and rating; both contribute to this lesson on how to write to Helium titles. I was rating and not too interested in the articles but I was dutifully trying to decide which was best. I make it a practice to rate at least five article before signing off, but often I will rate for half an hour or more. This morning I was more in the rating mood than usual. The thoughts of others were more important to me than at other times. In other words I was more receptive to the opinions of others.
Then the title "The most mis-used word in the English language" popped up. This is the type of article that I love reading and therefore rating. Both carry with it the potential of learning more about the craft of learning and that is something I am always in dire need of. Not only that the subject is entertaining. The first article was well written and was witty and liked it immensely. It gave several examples of words that were mis-used.
The second title was a little heavier in content but was by far the more learned. This author was citing how pronunciations differ and gave numerous examples. I learned a lot here although his knowledge and experience obviously was well above my own. I did something I seldom do in rating, I read word for word. He admitted to being an expert in English and I readily agreed.
These two articles side by side were excellent ones. Which one is the better? No doubt it was the one on the right. I looked at the title. I decided in favor of the one on the left because she wrote about mis-used words and not about wrong pronunciations. This told me how important the title is. It also pointed out how often we disregard the title and veer off course. The second article did just that.
Still, I was so taken with both articles I wanted to know who wrote them. I typed in the title in the search box and came to the title. There were around twenty-three in all. The author writing about pronunciations was number five. What isn't he in top place, I wondered. The top spot answered that question. The title read 'most mis-misused word in the English language, not words. The writer that was in the top spot, inadvertently or not, wrote only about one word. The mis-use of that word filled her well written article.
Of course it was not as entertaining for me as the others, but she had grasped the title totally. The others had not. This after my having written almost eight hundred articles for Helium. It stuns me to think how often I have missed the mark, topic wise. But, there is tomorrow and I will try to do better.
