Guide for the HTML illiterate on building a website

Building a website is easy, even without an HTML knowledge. There is plenty of documentation available about how to do it and what to use, but I'll outline the basics here.

1) Find a web host. There are plenty of good webhosts out there, some of them being ipower.com, godaddy.com, among others. Many of these hosts include interactive web design tools that will push out a basic page for you with very little work involved.

2) Figure out what your website will be about. A website is pointless without a goal in mind, so figure out what you want it to be about and how it's going to look. It's important to have a clear goal in mind.

3) Create. If you don't want to use the aforementioned tools that the hosting company provides (or if they don't) look into tools like Microsoft's Frontpage or Macromedia Dreamweaver. These are graphical HTML editors, and they make it relatively easy to create a page. You can also do a google search for "html editor" that will bring up quite a few free online HTML editors. Copy and paste the code into an HTML document and you're good to go. If you don't have an HTML editor, just paste it into a notepad file and save it as "index.html".

4) Upload. Upload your final product to your web host in the same structure that it was built in, and you should be good to go. It can take a few hours for the addressing to carry out to the rest of the internet, so some things might not work for a while. Give it some time and check back later.

If you're interested in blogging, look into Blogger.com and Wordpress.com as alternatives. They host and maintain your blog for you-all you need to do is post. They also have options to host your own if that's what you prefer.
