Neutrogena offers a kit that includes cream, dual speed applicator, and two foam heads for about $34. Neutrogena recommends use for 5 nights. Then take a week off followed by one to three weekly maintenance treatments each week after. You should notice an improved tone, smoother skin, and a healthy rosy glow. I notice my makeup seems to glide on more easily as well.
A professional microdermabrasion is more effective, but there is an increased risk of side effects. The microdermabrasion machine used in spas or salons is precise and offers more depth to the abrasion. There is a small risk of hyper-pigmentation or skin injury. In very rare instances there has been infection as a result of the microdermabrasion equipment not being handled or sterilized properly. The most common side effect is redness and increased sun sensitivity.
Your spa or salon will usually recommend several treatments. Some suggest as many as 10-12 weekly treatments before a monthly maintenance program begins. Sessions may last from 20 to 60 minutes. Costs range from $75 to $200 per treatment. Many places require you to purchase cosmaceutical products in addition to microdermabrasion. You could be expected to pay as much as $200 for "required" products.
Whether you choose home or professional treatments, keep these things in mind. Microdermabrasion is not recommended for those with severe acne. You should not undergo these treatments if you are taking Accutane. Consult your doctor before starting microdermabrasion if you are pregnant or nursing. Stay out of the sun and always wear sunscreen.
You can not entirely reverse the effects of aging and abuse, but you can have better looking skin. If you can withstand a little redness and irritation you can "retrain" your skin cell renewal process. You can enjoy healthier looking skin with improved texture, reduced scarring, and fewer wrinkles. Enjoy more youthful elasticity and say goodbye to those dark age spots. Take pictures so you don't forget what you used to look like.
