The folks at Reflexive have come up with another great game to add to their already abundant selection. Deep Blue Sea is a puzzle game, but unlike most puzzles, like Bejeweled and Sweet tooth, there is a story line; which adds another dimension to the game play.
Jessica Braxen is the advertising executive turned treasure hunter that you must help find treasure in the Deep Blue Sea. Before each level she will tell you what your objective is for that drive. A map will show you where you have been and where you need to go in order to find the shipwrecks and artifacts Jessica is looking for.
Each level has a certain number of treasures that you must move to the bottom of the board in order to collect them. This is done by getting three or more tiles in a row causing them to be removed from the board. But unlike Bejeweled or Sweet tooth the objects you are matching are under seas creatures, treasures or vegetation; to me they were easier to match than colored dots.
There is a time limit for each round, which is measured by the air level in your tank. And you guessed it running out of air means you lose that level. Each level you complete gives you another artifact fragment and gets you that much closer to the grand prize. Once you start earning money from your smaller finds you can go to the dive shop and purchase items to help you get through rounds faster; like minds that wipe out entire sections of the game pieces or fish that eat random items.
As the levels advance obstacles will be placed in your way, like tiles that can't be moved until you match them to tiles around them. This is where the land mines come in handy. You get bonus points for large matches and points for each artifact that you get to the bottom of the screen.
When the new level first comes up arrows show you with columns hold the artifacts are in that you need to collect so you know where to concentrate your efforts on. This is important because not all of the treasures are visible when the level first starts. My favorite part of this game is that you can continue to switch tiles while other tiles are being removed from the board. It has long been a peeve of mine that other similar games completely stop the action while new tiles are falling into place or being removed.
I very much enjoyed this game; the graphics are colorful and fun. It is a creative and refreshing version of an old favorite of mine. I give it 5 out of 5. GREAT GAME
