Can the US military be effective in nonmilitary efforts to revive a war-battered community?

of this broke, a vast majority deserted to their villages, agreeing only to return when a deployment was arranged in a less hostile region. This was extremely frustrating to the American's, who had spent months training the new soldiers.

American forces have been great ambassadors for their country and display a genuine care for the cultivation of Iraq. Granted, they are responsible for a lot of physical destruction on the country, but many Iraqi's embrace their presence and efforts at reconstruction. They have assisted in the construction of schools, medical centers and the creation of community programs. They have worked hand in hand with Iraqi's and the grand openings of such facilities are a major event and present enormous satisfaction to all involved and offer optimism for the future. The success of these projects is the responsibility of the Iraqi's, but the American's were there, again at risk to their own safety to get the ball rolling. Iraqi children are now in school, thanks in some part to American military assistance. People are being treated with modern medical supplies and drinking appropriately treated water thanks to the American military.

I am not an advocate for the American military, or the war in Iraq, but the biggest impression left on me during my work in the country is that of the American soldier. I have observed their courteous and friendly treatment of the locals, and the thoroughness with which they've conducted their mission, sometimes under extreme frustration and loss of life. I'm sure some of them have a different attitude privately, but they go about their business with professionalism and a dedication to duty that I admired.

It is important that these processes continue and the Iraqis develop industries that will bring jobs and a future to their war torn country. When people see the value in progress, they will be less inclined to seek sanctuary in the destructive ideals of religious zealots. When the clothes on their backs and the evening meal are being provided by hard work and ingenuity, they will force the insurgent element to flee, thus controlling the stability of their country. This will take time and there will be many battles in the process, but the majority of people possess the will to succeed, thanks largely to American military assistance.
