If you're going to attempt blogging as a career, then you have to approach it like you would approach any other career choice.
Firstly there is a learning curve. You have to know what you are doing - after all if you wanted to become a doctor you wouldn't go out and attempt to treat people with no knowledge, would you?
Yet that is basically what a lot of people do every day; they start a blog because they've heard they can make a lot of money at it and then give it up when they're not earning a fortune within a couple of weeks.
Blogging is like any other career. You start at the ground floor and learn the basics before you get any real responsibility. As you go along and develop your knowledge you begin to advance a bit further and gain enough knowledge to get a pay rise. The difference is that with blogging you start by earning nothing. You have to do something worthwhile to be able to receive compensation for what you're doing.
For that, you need to write lots of worthwhile posts and build up a regular pattern of content that helps to deepen and broaden your blog. You won't get highly rated by the search engines overnight, but if you work on building up that content and making sure it contains plenty of keywords for the search engine spiders to latch onto, then eventually you will start getting traffic to your blog.
If you want to make enough money to really use blogging as a career you will need to monetize your blog as well. This isn't just a question of joining Google Adsense; join websites like Affiliate Window and Commission Junction to find products and services that are related to the subject of your blog which you can promote and earn either a finder's fee or a commission on any products bought.
Another essential part of blogging is keeping an eye on your stats. See what's working and what isn't, and tweak things accordingly. Remember that learning curve I talked about? This is part of it.
The problem with so many moneymaking opportunities online is that some people think they can make bucketloads of cash overnight. Now, blogging can make you a lot of money, but the reason so many blogs (and bloggers) fail is that they expect it all to happen without work. But it does take work, and a lot of it, to make blogging a career.
If you are passionate about your blog; if you are writing about something you love; if you work at reviewing and tweaking your content constantly, then there is no reason why you can't make blogging a career, because if you have these qualities then you have what it takes to succeed.
Good luck!
