My favorite sandwich is a rather simpe concoction, which, for some reason, many people find weird or even gross.
Simply put, it's two pieces of toast, a slice of cheese, and a generous helping of Miracle Whip.
Is that so strange?
Now, to make this sandwich, there are a few things you need to do. For starters, wait until the toast cools before putting the cheese in the mix. In my experience when cheese gets between two hot pieces of toast there's a bit of water condensation that occurs from the slices "entrapping" the bread. These tiny beads of water can cause the cheese to taste a little gross and ruin a great sandwich.
In contrast, just about any spreadable topping is BETTER when the toast is still warm. In this case it's Miracle Whip, but that's also true of butter, jelly, peanut butter, cream cheese, or just about anything else you can think of. This is because the topping "sinks in" to the bread crust, giving an "ingrained" taste which enhances the flavor.
After the toast is cool, and the Whip spread; you put the cheese in. Now, the type of cheese you use is important in almost ANY sandwich, and this one is no exception. If you're like me, you usually get the sliced cheese that are each individually wrapped. Now, with the price of milk jumping up over the years, you might be tempted to get the cheap "$1.00 for a package of twelve (or sixteen)" brand of cheese. DON'T. These types of cheese slices usually taste terrible! Now, don't get me wrong, you don't necessarily have to buy an expensive name brand to get good cheese (although, unlike such items as sugar, floor, or some types of peanut butter, name brands of cheese usually DO taste better.) As a person with a limit budget, I can tell you this from experience that there are still several lesser known brands that taste good as well.
In general, you want a cheese that was at least over $1.50 per package (the kind I usually get is $2.10 plus tax, I believe.) Also, the more it looks like the cheese was made from milk, rather than vegetable oil, usually the better it is. Good cheese is usually a light orange in color. Bad tasting cheese is a dark orange (or sometimes light yellow) and a green color usually means the cheese is spoiled and growing mold (but you probably knew that already.)
Now, these guidelines are strictly for American cheese, I can't really tell you too much about mozzarella or other types that also come in slices, as I don't use those types for MY sandwich.
You now know how to make one of my favorite sandwich. Personally, I think they taste best in the morning (usually when I'm in too much of a rush to have a proper breakfast) but anytime os good.
If you try it sometime, let me know what you think.
NOTE: I suppose you could also use mayonnaise, but then that really WOULD be gross. ;)
