Online video game reviews: Great Tree

The Great Tree is a fun action-adventure game in which the player controls a faerie who must collect magic pollen to save the life of their mystical home. You must move the mouse to control the direction and speed of your winged pixie, chasing glowing pollen grains and returning them to a central star for transport back to your tree, while avoiding deadly insects which travel in various patterns across the screens and other forest dangers like venus fly traps and pollen-stealing frogs. Fill your 'pony tail' queue with pollen to get a scoring bonus or unleash a blast of Ancient Fire. You must also carefully steal green spirals from the large beetles and use them to rescue captive 'Swee' (a sort of magical bee), which can get you power ups such as shields, health refills, and weapons like a freeze bomb or a spread of fireballs. The levels slowly increase in difficulty and the game also has RPG aspects, giving you stars which can be used to increase the attributes of agility, health, power and magic, and supplying you with new wings you can equip to gain various abilities. There is a continuing story line about a war between your tribe and the evil Ixies, supported by excellent sketch art and read by a gorgeous voice. The graphics of this game are beautifully rendered, the background forest scenes lush and vibrant, the insect foes darkly menacing and the darting faerie character well drawn for its tiny size. The music is subtle and haunting, working well to draw you into the spirit of the game, and the sound effects are unobtrusive and add a very nice 'mystical' feel. The action of the game is addicting, blending fantasy and combat aspects with standard seek-and-avoid methods to deliver innovative game play, and the ongoing plot and the RPG character building and customization serve well to draw you into the game. I found this game challenging from the start but not ridiculously hard at any point, with an appropriate learning curve. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and would seriously consider purchasing the full version. My rating for The Great Tree is 4 out of 5 stars.
