Should US environmental standards apply when multinational companies develop the petroleum resources of fragile ecosystems such as Peru's Amazon?

Title endorsed in part by:

it be funny if the whole Middle Eastern mess was just a diversion so Bush's buddies could plunder unhindered in South America? Hilarious.

Apparently humans are so uncivilized, so unintelligent, and so unevolved that we destroy the very places we live. By this stage of human development we shouldn't even be using petroleum products at all. We've known for years that burning it is causing global warming and ruining the ozone layer. We have other options for energy supplies aside from sun, wind, and water; there is also geothermal and biomass. I grabbed this information from the kids'

energy pages as well. However, the big oil people, who have great influence with Washington, squash these options underfoot since they see no monetary value in these developments and it cuts into their oil money. Technology has evolved hugely in recent years and yet it can't seem to change at all in terms of energy. When will technology catch up to present day standards of life?

The United States is the last country on earth that should be held up as an example of environmental soundness. The record worsens with every administration and no thought is ever given to safety or long term consequences and future effects.
Unfortunately, even though the Democrats were elected to lead the Congress in 2006, they did nothing to stop the corruption of the Bush administration. And the Bush administration has truly reached a zenith in terms of destructive behavior regarding the environment.

If the love, light, and power of God are in every blade of grass, every rock, every bush, and every flower, why do the Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Jews, indeed all forms of religion, do nothing to save our earth? My heart cries for the destruction of our earth and in so happening, the destruction of our people.
