I believe our motives and level of authority dictate whether we are in a position to pass judgment on the other person. For instance in a world like ours, no community can exist for long where nobody is ever held accountable, and before someone is held accountable, judgment is passed: how would a father or mother teach their children moral values? How can a teacher grade a student's performance? How can a criminal not be brought to trial and stand judgment? By in large, if no one ever judged other people, there would be no real human community, there would be no sense of security and order.
One should ask before passing judgment, am I doing good or bad? For what reasons am I passing judgment. Am I passing judgment to make matters better or worst? What's the benefit of passing judgment in this situation?
However, in the point of view of passing judgment on another person as to pass criticism, then I say do not judge others as not to fall into judgment yourself...and with the same balance you judge others, you will also be judged. Who are we to judge others and would we like others to judge us? Only someone who is perfect, can make himself a judge. But alas! is anyone perfect in this world? Indeed, no one is perfect and will never reach perfection in this world, although we ought to seek perfection through God who is perfect, and seeking perfection is judging oneself not others.
Who are we to judge others? What are we trying to achieve by judging others? We do not know what is behind the scene and we will never now the full truth in any particular situation in order to be in a position to judge others. You never know, maybe in the future you find yourself in the same situation and find yourself standing judgment. Try to image this scenario - isn't it terrifying? So next time you are about to pass judgment on others, put yourself in their place and feel the pain that this would cause them, then you will refrain from judging them.
Who are we to judge others? What are we trying to prove when we are judging others, are we trying to prove that we are right and they are wrong? Are we trying to make them feel small? Sometimes, people judge others as a cover up of their own weaknesses; to draw people's attention away from them. Sometimes, people judge others just because they have nothing else to occupy themselves with.
Who are we to judge others? Don't we have anything better to do? We could one day find ourselves as vulnerable as the other person upon whom we have passed judgment.
Years ago, people who had been found living in immorality were stoned to death. In the Bible there is a true story of an adulteress who was running away for her life as people were after her wanting to stone her. However, Jesus addressed them saying that if there was anyone that had not sinned, then this person could throw a stone at her. But one by one, they dropped their stones and left; and Jesus said to her, (Him who is perfect and without sin); "Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more."
So, are you in authority to pass judgment and are you fairly passing judgment? Remember, we are all as vulnerable and as fallible as the other person.
