Depression: Types, symptoms and treatment options

after giving birth. The symptoms are very similar to major depression. Postpartum depression can easily be confused with baby blues." However, "baby blues" generally last only a week while postpartum depression stays around longer. Postpartum depression can occasionally lead to postpartum psychosis which can involve severe anxiety, fears of hurting the baby or oneself, delusional thoughts, hallucinations, and odd behaviors.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a less severe form of depression. It is most common in northern latitudes during the winter months when days are shorter, the weather is cold and the sky is a gloomy gray. The symptoms associated with SAD include general malaise, an immobilized feeling, and irritability. SAD subsides as the skies clear and the days grow longer.

Depression Treatments:

Untreated depression can worsen and last for years. Seeking out immediate treatment and the support of family, friends, and coworkers can help keep depression under control. Treatment options for depression range from doctor prescribed depression medications to self-care methods. What works for one type of depression, or for one person, may not work for another. Finding relief from the symptoms most often requires trying several different methods, or combinations of methods.

Depression medications are called antidepressants and are doctor prescribed. These medications can help improve mood, concentration, appetite, and other symptoms of depression. However, many have undesirable side effects such as dry mouth, headaches, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction. There are several different categories of antidepressants, as well as many different brands to try within each category. Some depression medications also cause bothersome side effects while stopping the drug. People with bipolar depression may require the use of mood stabilizers and anti-psychotics in addition to antidepressants to help control the episodes of mania.

Psychotherapy is another treatment for depression. Therapy involves speaking with a trained therapist over the phone or in person. This type of treatment can help patients sort through the feelings they have and understand what they are going through. There are several different types of psychotherapy, including behavioral, interpersonal, and group therapy. These can be either short-term or long-term treatments. Psychotherapy is commonly combined with the use of antidepressants.

There are also alternative methods for treating depression. It is thought though, that these methods may not be effective in the treatment of moderate to severe cases of depression. Herbal remedies such as St. John's wort and gingko biloba have been found to be useful in some cases. However, herbal remedies can cause interactions with other medications and a doctor should be consulted before using them. Exercising on a regular basis and maintaining a healthy diet has been known to reduce the symptoms of depression in many people. Other methods available include acupuncture, reflexology, and self-help manuals.
