President George W. Bushthe world's super-cop and mastermind of the war on terror- has also proved to be a master of political double-speak. It is said that successful politicians play to their audience, saying exactly what they want to hear. Those who practice double-speak will fire up the patriotic fervor of unionized autoworkers in the morning, and ship their jobs overseas in the afternoon. And Bush has been doing it since he fixed his own election in 2000.
Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, George Bush told the American people that the terrorists who had flown airplanes into buildings would be tracked down and "brought to justice." Justice, like Freedom, and Democracy, are button-words, meaning that they push people's buttons, prompting them to jump to their feet and offer enthusiastic ovations in demonstration of their unqualified support. When the President of the United States speaks of Justice, Democracy, and Freedom, in a State of the Union Address before Congress, it's a sure thing that every use of these button-words will bring the desired response. Guaranteed! With the omnipresent Television cameras scanning the crowd, there is simply no way that the harshest Bush critic will not rise to celebrate these noble precepts.
Using these words, George Bush has managed to convince the American people that the September 11 attacks were somehow linked to Iraq, that Al Quaida, Saddam, and Bin Laden were pretty much the same thing, and that this immutable fact necessitated and justified the illegal invasions of two sovereign countries. It is America's mission to bring Justice, Freedom, and Democracy to all the people of the world, whether they want it or not.
Be advised that in the United States, Justice means putting 30% of all Black men in prison; Democracy means that the electoral process is not as important as winning at all cost; and Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
Mahatma Gandhi
There is a well-entrenched and altogether hideous notion pervasive in American politics which suggests that changing the course of a particular policy, however odious that policy might be, means that every effort and sacrifice associated with that policy
