Getting control of your credit card debt

Americans are carrying over 2 trillion in credit card debt annually. Over 71 percent of all Americans only make the minimum monthly payments on their credit cards every year. In other words we as a nation are in debt up to our eyeballs. We need to take corrective measures to get out of debt and to stay out of debt.

How are you going to eliminate your credit card debt?

Here is a credit card debt management program, to consolidate your credit card debt:

PAY MORE EVERY MONTH

Make more than just the minimum monthly payment. If you only make the minimum monthly payment, you will be paying off that credit card debt for thirty or more years. All this started with buying some items you needed around the house, like a lawnmower, and new furniture, and a new refrigerator. Before you knew it you owed almost the entire amount you were given as a limit in the first place.

LOWER INTEREST RATE
You thought you were doing the smart thing when you went shopping and applied for that store credit card to get that ten or fifteen percent off from major department stores. Guess what? It's not worth it. Those department stores charge higher interest rates than the regular credit cards do. That ten to fifteen percent you saved is not worth it, unless you pay off that credit card amount you owe right away.

You can also call your credit card company and ask for the interest rate to be lowered. Tell them you've been getting numerous offers from their competitors for lower interest rates. Tell them what the other creditors have been offering and the lower rate that was offered. If they want you to stay on board so to speak, and not go to a competitor with a lower interest rate, then they should lower your rate to keep your business.

Get rid of all those credit cards, and just keep one. Keep the card with the lowest rate, and consolidate all your credit card debt onto the card with the lowest rate. All those offers you get in the mail everyday is worth something. Take the one with the lowest rate, and that has a rate that stays low for a long time. Read the fine print because sometimes the rate goes up after just a few short months. By consolidating all your credit card debt onto just one card, then you will only have to pay one low rate every month, and you will only have to keep track of one card.

PAY ON TIME

Pay your credit card monthly payment on time every month to avoid those costly late payments. The credit card company will penalize you and they will charge up to $39 in late payments. If
