Computer maintenance can be a big deal. Learning at least a few of the more important maintenance tips can be very helpful in avoiding costly repairs to a computer. How you learn about computer maintenance is important, too.
If you have an opportunity to learn about computer maintenance in a formal education setting, it is the best beginning you can get. By attending some type of classroom training you will get the information plus reference materials. You should also receive generous amounts of hands-on training in an environment where you do not have to fear ruining a computer.
However, sometimes this type of training can be quite expensive. Computer maintenance is not the same as computer repair. This means that learning how to maintain a computer is not a short trip to a good job. Maintenance is more about keeping your own computer or a small business computer in top operating condition. It may or may not include limited repairing and installing of hardware.
Computers have to be maintained in two ways. The hardware needs to be kept up, and the software and operating need to be regularly updated and reviewed. Mastering both of these areas is vital to getting continued good service from any computer.
After formal training, the next best way to learn computer maintenance is to work with someone who does a good job with this. The person should be able to instruct you on how to keep the hardware clean and dust free. This includes the outside and inside of the computer.
You need to be taught the proper way to install boards and drives inside the computer cabinet. There are lots of things inside that can be bent and broken. Learning what to watch out for is an important step in learning hardware maintenance.
Operating system maintenance involves learning how to add and remove files and programs. You need to keep a constant effort up to keep the hard drive as free of digital clutter as possible. This should include the registry and cache files also. You need to be taught how to make updates to the operating system.
Software issues can be the trickiest to learn because every computer has its own mix of software. This might require a combination of people and classroom work to cover all of the basics.
Finally, a good tip for beginners is to buy a manual about simple ways to keep your computer running. There are several of these on the market. Just thumb through the appropriate ones for your computer until you find one that suits your needs and learning style.
