cellular shape and composition. Eventually the skin cells die and produce the outer layer which resists abrasion and forms a barrier against loss of nutrients and water.
Additionally, skin contains specialized cells. Melanocytes are one example, and are the cells responsible for producing melanin which gives the skin, hair, and eyes color, and helps provide protection from the UV portion of sunlight. There are also glands that produce oil and sweat. Oil glands, or sebaceous glands, usually surround a hair follicle and are often associated with acne. Sweat glands release water mixed with salts.
AGING
As the body ages, the flow of blood to the skin is reduced. The skin layers thin, and become more transparent. Collage production is decreased, and the skin loses its ability to stretch. Skin is more easily damaged, repairs more slowly, and sags and wrinkles as the elastic fibers decrease and the hypodermis loses fat.
