Lifestyle Changes of Parenthood
Let's address some important issues that you should consider before taking on parenting:
SLEEP
Say good bye to sleep as you know it. 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is a thing of the past. By the time your baby has grown into a young child and finally sleeps 8 hours at a time, you will be so used to sleeping in intervals with one eye open that you will never be able to sleep a full 8 hours at one time ever again in your life. Ok, maybe not ever but it will seem like it.
YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR SPOUSE
Now you are going to find out more about your spouse than you ever knew. You are going to learn what kind of childhood he/she had and what parts of it he/she wants to apply to your child. To say you might not agree on a lot of things is an understatement. When a two-some turns into a three-some there is bound to be adjustments that need to be made. Be prepared.
DIAPER CHANGING, WHOSE TURN IS IT?
As your baby gets older, this task grows nastier. From day one, establish a schedule so that you do not get stuck changing all the diapers. If you can, try to make a mental note of what time the baby creates the "NASTY" one, you know, the poopie diaper, so that you can make sure it is not your turn.
ONE OF YOU WILL HAVE SOME BODY CHANGES AND ONE OF YOU WON'T
If you are the lucky one who doesn't lose the ability to see your feet during the pregnancy, be mindful of what you say about weight gain around the person who will no longer be able to wear a belt for at least a few months.
EXCERCISE SWEATS
Be aware that it is easy to get into a comfort zone wearing exercise sweats all the time but keep in mind that they are unattractive, Mom. You can still exercise and get your shape back. Only now instead of going to the gym in your free time, which you will have very little of, you can get your exercise by pushing the baby in the stroller. Around and around the block you go. The neighbors will get a chance to see your new pride and joy. Life is good.
QUIET MOMENTS
Mom and Dad should make the most out of quiet moments when the baby is asleep. Don't lose sight of the couple you were before you became Mom and Dad. Don't be afraid to ask for help from Grandparents. A couple needs their alone time more than ever. Make a special "Date Night" at least once a month, if not sooner. Baby might just want a break from you too.
